Following publication of the Government consultation paper on
proposals for a new regulatory system for high-rise buildings the
Housing Ministry has announced a series of Resident Roadshows to
explain the proposals to tenants and residents of high-rise
buildings.
The consultation paper "Building a safer future" sets out how
the Government plans to overhaul the regulatory system for high
rise residential buildings through:
- Clearer responsibilities for those building or managing these
buildings;
- A stronger voice in the system and better information for
residents;
- Greater oversight by regulators; and
- Tougher enforcement when things go wrong.
The closing date for responses to the consultation paper is 31
July 2019.
ARCH Chief Executive John Bibby has been invited to a roundtable
meeting with Housing Ministry officials on 18 July and the Ministry
published a first issue of a Building Safety Programme Bulletin on 5
July, including plans for a series of roadshows for residents at
which residents will be able to meet Ministry officials to hear
more about the proposals in the consultation paper and express
their views on the proposals directly to the Ministry.
The events are taking place in Birmingham on 15 July, Leeds on
16 July, Nottingham on 19 July, Newcastle on 23 July and Bristol on
26 July.
Any tenants or residents interested in attending one of the
events can book a place by clicking on the links below.
The ARCH Board held an initial discussion on a response to the
proposals in the consultation paper at its Board meeting on 4
July.
We believe that the timescale for responding to such a complex
set of proposals is too short and will be making this point however
we invite ARCH member councils to forward their views and comments
on the proposal to ARCH Policy Adviser Matthew Warburton Matthew.warburton@arch-housing.org.uk
by Monday 23 July to help inform an ARCH response to the
consultation paper.
If your council is making a formal response to the consultation
paper, it would be helpful if you could copy ARCH into your
response.
