Ban on evictions extended until at least 31 May 2021 18/03/2021 Labelled as Legislation, Tenants

Following the decision taken in February to extend the ban on bailiff evictions to 31 March 2021, on Wednesday 10 March, the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, Robert Jenrick announced an extension to the ban on bailiff enforced evictions for residential tenants, in all but the most serious circumstances, until at least 31 May 2021.

The requirement for landlords to provide six-month notice periods to residential tenants before they evict will also be extended until at least 31 May. In making the announcement the Housing Ministry estimated that around 49% of hospitality workers and 36% of retail workers are currently renting.

The Housing Ministry subsequently updated the guidance for landlords and tenants in the private and social rented sectors to explain the possession action process in the county courts in England and Wales. The updated guidance is available on the Government website.

The Government has also confirmed that the ban on commercial evictions will be extended for a further three months to 30 June.
